Day 1

After arriving on Lord Howe and a quick settle-in at your accommodation at Ocean View Lodge, we will meet for introductions and a session titled “Getting to know your digital camera and settings”. Then it’s off to Ned’s Beach to pick the best locations for our sunrise shoot the following morning.

In the evening, it’s time for our gourmet ‘Welcome Dinner’ at the renowned Pandanus Restaurant. There will also be an informal chat where you will find out what to expect from the week.

Day 2

It’s up early for a pre-dawn shoot at Ned’s Beach, just a short distance from our base. Here you can photograph the sunrise over the beach.

After breakfast, we’ll head off for a cruise onto the lagoon in a glass-bottom boat, which will include some snorkelling in one of the most renowned coral/fish areas in the world! Time to get those underwater compact cameras out :-))

After landing ashore, we will have morning tea, followed by a bird photography session. With the variety of birds on Lord Howe Island, we should find lots of subjects to photograph. A barbeque lunch is included and then it’s off for a short walk to photograph the rock pools of Old Gulch. This is followed by a walk up the Mt Eliza track, for a chance to photograph the spectacular views over the turquoise lagoon, southward to the twin peaks of Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird. We will return via boat back to our starting point, close to our accommodation.

Day 3

After a sleep in and breakfast, you’ll have some free time to practise your photography, before Michael will do a presentation on bird/wildlife photography.

After lunch, David will host a ‘Questions and Answers’ session, where you can ask any photography-related questions specific to your own personal needs.

Late in the afternoon, we start our walk to the top of the sea cliffs at Malabar (situated just behind our accommodation). The cliffs themselves are spectacular and the views to the north across the Admiralty Islands are remarkable. If you enjoy macro photography, there are various macro subjects along the way, as well as different bird species.

We will photograph on the cliffs until the sun sets, before heading back to base.

Day 4
Another early morning start, this time photographing the sunrise from the jetty at the bottom of the road where we are staying. After breakfast, we will visit the island’s natural history museum, followed by a visit to the southern end of the island towards Little Island, in search for Providence Petrels,  Lord Howe Island Woodhens, as well as some stunning seascapes.
In the afternoon there will be an image critique session. After a brief break, David will present a post-processing session, incorporating Photoshop and Lightroom.

For our final session of the day, we will walk a short distance to the shore, to photograph any different birds we find.

Day 5

Free Day. This is your chance for your own personal explorations, or a time to relax. Options include a guided Mt Gower climb; a SCUBA dive; another snorkelling trip or a fishing charter. You could also revisit your favourite locations and subjects again with your camera….

Day 6

This morning we’ll head to Blinky Beach for another sunrise shoot. There will also be opportunities to photograph the beautiful kingfishers that often sit on the fence near the airstrip, as well as the possibility of photographing Masked Boobies and Providence Petrels.

After breakfast, we spend time playing with light and shade in the palm forests on Lord Howe Island, before a bit of free time. Our final sunset session is close-by our base, on the shores of the lagoon at Signal Point. With views of Mt Gower and Mt. Lidgebird as your backdrop, you can’t go wrong!

Day 7

This morning you’ll have free time to pack and prepare for the trip home and say your goodbyes. Departures for home cities are at various times through the day. No matter what your level of experience, Michael and David will help you gain valuable photographic technique that will ultimately lead to you taking better quality photos. With two professional nature photographers and experienced photography tutors on hand throughout the week, there will be many opportunities to ask any photography-related questions, specific to your own personal needs.
